To promote Community Service Orders as a non-custodial sentencing option in Uganda
Community service is a Directorate under the Ministry of Internal Affairs mandated to manage community service orders for purposes of rehabilitating and reintegrating eligible offenders. A person convicted of a minor offence, the court may, instead of sentencing that person to a term of imprisonment, order the convict to undertake unpaid community work as form of punishment.
Its functions include;
- Rehabilitation and reintegration of eligible offenders
- Tracking compliance to community service orders
- Decongesting remand and correctional facilities
- Training and needs assessment for development and implementation of community service.
