MINISTRY OF INTERNAL AFFAIRS PERMANENT SECRETARY IN LUZIRA PRISONS TOUR
The Permanent Secretary Ministry of Internal Affairs Dr. Benon Mutambi has today, 12th January 2018, had a familiarization tour of Luzira Prisons by the Commissioner General of Prisons Dr. Johnson Byabashaija. He was taken through all the sections of Luzira Maximum Security Prison that are; Luzira Upper Prison, Murchison Bay Prison, Kampala Remand Prison and the Luzira Women’s Prison.
Dr. Mutambi was happy with the rehabilitation programs that include tailoring among others. Prisoners make their own, as well as Prison Staff uniform among other products and produce from the prison’s carpentry workshop, farms and other rehabilitation activities they engage in.
Prisoners are also encouraged to study with many enrolled at the various prisons schools across the different levels from Primary School to University with an aim of ensuring that they do not come out of prison as only rehabilitated individuals, but also educated individuals. The school also has a fully furnished computer laboratory.
Dr. Byabashaija also informed the Permanent Secretary that the Prisons Services was already in the process of creating an a comprehensive online data base for all prisoners that will be connected to the National Data base for purposes of proper record keeping and planning.
Dr. Mutambi congratulated the Commissioner General on the achievements the institution has attained, pointing out sports and the housing program for prisons officers for special praise while promising much closer co-operation.
