Community service is a Directorate under the Ministry of internal affairs mandated to manage community service orders for purposes of rehabilitating and reintegrating eligible offenders. A person convicted of a minor offence, the court may, instead of sentencing that person to a term of imprisonment, order the convict to undertake unpaid community work as form of punishment.

Its functions include;

  • Rehabilitation and reintegration of eligible offenders
  • Tracking compliance to community service orders
  • Decongesting remand and correctional facilities
  • Training and needs assessment for development and implementation of community service.
